Chez Marie-Joe B&B – Saint-Pierre, St. Pierre & Miquelon

There are not a lot of affordable options in St. Pierre & Miquelon, but felt this was one of the better options (even though it was still quite expensive). The place books up quite far in advance during the tourist season, so please keep that in mind.

Abba Boutique Inn – St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada

Fundy Line Motel – Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada

No frills roadside motel, but it was great for the eclipse in 2024, as it was almost directly on the line of the middle of the eclipse’s path. Prices vary greatly depending on the season.

Samesun Hostel Montreal – Montreal, Quebec, Canada

It’s too much money for a private room at a hostel, but prices have really exploded post-covid almost everywhere in the US and Canada.

Pill Hill Mansion House – Chicago, Illinois, USA
Address: 9125 S Bennett Ave, Chicago, IL Contact/Website: AVOID Price (May 2024): $38/night Shared Dorm Beds Review Link: N/A Comments: This place was terrible, and I do not recommend it. It’s price seems attractive, but it’s a long trip to the downtown Chicago area, the place was really dirty and it doesn’t feel like a safe place to stay.

Staypineapple Hotel Rose – Portland, Oregon, USA

It was right in the downtown area of Portland which was handy. Price hasn’t increased much in 2025.

Amsterdam Hostel – San Francisco, California, USA

Easy to get around on transit from there. Prices are down a bit from last year, showing as $80/night as of mid-2025.

Kings Motel – Inglewood, California, USA

El Dorado Motel – Twain Harte, California, USA

Address: 22675 Twain Harte Dr, Twain Harte, CA Contact/Website: AVOID Price (May 2024): $89/night Standard Queen Room Review Link: N/A Comments: Truly awful. Dirty and old rooms with broken windows, stains on the walls and floor. Broken furniture. Had to get them to move me to a second room because of the dirt in the first one, and then wanted $10 more for the privilege. Tainted an otherwise wonderful trip to Yosemite National Park. Pictures on their website are at least 20 years old. Wifi never worked. Reviews say that some rooms have been renovated, so maybe you’ll get lucky.

Whispering Pines Lodge – Kernville, California, USA

Amazing rooms, friendly staff and even had a giant hot tub in the room. Expensive if you’re on a budget, but one of the few times I felt like the extra cost was worth it. Prices are the same in 2025.

Death Valley Inn – Beatty, Nevada, USA

Includes free breakfast for all guests. Clean rooms, nice staff and strong wifi. Price is up about 20% in 2025.

Travelodge Palm Springs – Palm Springs, California, USA

A nice simple place that had comfortable rooms, good AC and strong Wifi. Price is about the same in 2025, but varies a lot depending on the season.

Hostelling International San Diego – San Diego, California, USA

Even their shared dorms are almost $50US a night now in 2025. This room runs $170/night even with a membership. Private room was fine, but this was the last place I stayed in the US, and after this, I re-examined my budgeting for places to stay and vowed to cut the cost of places to stay by at least 2/3rds in Mexico and beyond. Turned out to be even easier than I expected…

Mexico 🇲🇽

Hotel Catalina – Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico

Still on the higher end, but already a huge price difference from San Diego the day before. Clean rooms, quiet at night and a good spot in the central part of the city. Price is the same for 2025.

Homestay w/ Xavier – Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico

The Loft is a fully separate apartment with its own kitchen and bathroom, separate entrance too. Great wifi, and the host, Xavier, is a very nice guy who’s a wealth of information. Price in 2025: $42/night (weekly rate)

Hotel TerraSal – Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur, Mexico
Address: Emiliano Zapata, Guerrero Negro, MX Contact/Website: Link Price (August 2024): $70/night Standard King Room Review Link: N/A Comments: A nice spot in a town with few options. Didn’t really have much to end up doing in Guerrero Negro as their big time is the whale migrations. But it was a nice place, very clean and excellent staff.

Hotel Posada – San Ignacio, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Not a lot of options in town, and only contact was via WhatsApp with the owner. He can arrange taxis for you if needed.

Hotel Del Real – Santa Rosalía, Baja California Sur, Mexico

They don’t have much for an online presence, booking is only available via phone/WhatsApp. Right on the main square, and lots of restaurants and sightseeing opportunities just steps away.

Hostal Casas Loreto – Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Todos Santos Hostel – Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Price was a little high in retrospect, as it’s still shared bathrooms and showers, but the AC was good, and the place had a nice vibe to it. Lots of shared accommodations as well. Just a note that it’s a bit far from the downtown, and at night the streets aren’t well lit.

Hotel Casa Ceci Inn – San José del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico

I had a standard room booked, however there was an issue with the AC, so they upgraded me to the suite for the two nights I was there at no extra charge. Between them accommodating me, the location, and the price even for standard rooms, I can recommend it. San Jose Del Cabo is expensive, but these guys were really good.

La Paz Homestay w/ Cecy – La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Local family owned, private space with all the amenities. Quiet in the evenings, lightning fast wifi and a full kitchen so you can do meals at the place. Current price (Summer 2025) shows up as $26US/night, which is still a great deal.

Recamara a media cuadra de la playa – Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico

Quite at night, super comfortable bed and no problems at all. There was some construction next door when I was there, but I’m sure that’s long over by now.

Suites Chingón – Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico

Ended up here far longer than originally planned as I needed an extra week to recover from my illness. Nice spot in the center of town, close to everything. Lots of rooms available for every need. No AC though, so might be super hot in the peak summer stretch.
